Pharmaceutical valves are designed to meet high hygienic requirements and are suitable for use in industries such as pharmaceutical and food processing.
The following table lists the advantages and disadvantages of valves commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry:
Valve Types | Merit | Shortcoming |
Shut-off valves |

Under EU GMP guidelines, valves must prevent cross-contamination and be easy to clean. In practice, FDA-certified diaphragm valves are the specified choice for sterile applications, while FDA-certified globe valves are mandated for clean-room utilities. For sterile duties, FDA documentation explicitly requires diaphragm valves to guarantee effective cleanability. Non-product media such as cooling water or steam are handled by butterfly, ball or globe valves; since these fluids do not directly affect product quality, selection is driven primarily by cost considerations.
